Dr David Okello is currently the WHO Country Representative in Nigeria. He was previously the Director of the WHO Regional Office for Africa Cluster on AIDS, TB and Malaria (ATM). The key role of the ATM Cluster is to contribute to the reduction of disease burden due to HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria in the countries of the WHO African Region through the provision of normative guidance and technical support to ensure universal access to cost-effective interventions within the context of primary health care.
Dr Okello joined the Regional Office at the beginning of the year 2000 as Regional Adviser for Health Research Policy & Promotion. Later he worked as WHO Representative in Swaziland and Kenya; and for a period of about 1 year in 2006 was also responsible for overall oversight of the WHO Country Office in South Africa. Prior to joining WHO, Dr Okello was a lecturer at Makerere Medical School where he undertook several consultancy appointments for the Council on Health Research for Development (COHRED) and the WHO/TDR Programme; and served on various policy committees of the Ministry of Health and the University in Uganda.
